{"id":5073,"date":"2019-04-15T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/164.138.209.155\/~ccli\/?p=5073"},"modified":"2021-11-30T15:20:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:20:49","slug":"businesses-want-certainty-on-carbon-pricing-not-constitutional-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/164.138.209.155\/~ccli\/businesses-want-certainty-on-carbon-pricing-not-constitutional-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses want certainty on carbon pricing \u2013 not constitutional challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the Ontario Court of Appeal today begins hearing a constitutional challenge by the Ontario government to the federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, the CCLI\u2019s Dr Janis Sarra published an op-ed in The Globe and Mail outlining why businesses want certainty on carbon pricing \u2013 not constitutional challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Sarra writes: \u201cValuable tax dollars are being expended in this litigation at a time when it is clear that unless effective carbon pricing is in place, investors will move their capital elsewhere and Canadian businesses will suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSupreme Court of Canada decisions have been clear for years that the federal government\u2019s power is to be used to address issues of national concern\u201d, Dr Sarra added. \u201cThe Supreme Court has previously held that where a matter has achieved a \u2018degree of singleness, distinctiveness and indivisibility\u2019 of federal concern that distinguishes it from solely provincial matters or issues that provinces alone cannot address, federal action is constitutional.
